Malting news Ireland: Malt imports increase to 68,591 tonnes in 2019

There was a large change in the amount of malt imported into Ireland last year, Agriland reported on February 20.

Approximately 68,591 tonnes of malt were imported in 2019, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

This is a significant increase from 2018 when an estimated 27,164 tonnes were imported. In 2017, this figure was 42,636 tonnes, while in 2016 just 17,291 tonnes were imported.

Lower yields in 2018 may have impacted this figure, while the increase may also not surprise readers as the country’s largest malting facility suffered a partial collapse in July 2019.

49% (33,517tonnes) of malt imports came from Belgium, while 41% (28,145 tonnes) came from Great Britain.

Approximately 3,421 tonnes crossed the border from Northern Ireland; 3,103 tonnes were imported from the Czech Republic; while 404 tonnes came from the Netherlands.

The estimated value of these imports according to the CSO was €24,664,960. This would bring the cost per tonne to €359.59.
